Artifacts in the Lab

We are now twenty days into our lab work. After catching up with all of the duties we left behind over the six weeks,we have finally finished organizing all of our paperwork and washing the artifacts we brought back to the lab in Maryland.

The photo above shows a tray of artifacts that has been washed and laid out to dry.  All of it was excavated together from the contents of the cesspool in the far back of the Capawan parcel. (one of about fifteen such bags) You can see quite a mix of items. Nails, concrete and window glass suggest that part of the building at the front of the property had been demolished and dumped into the empty hole at the back. But some of the house contents had also been dumped. These include some personal items including some cosmetic bottles. Most interesting is a small locket that used to contain a photograph.  The cardboard backing of the photograph survived the elements but the image has been washed away by time, forever!

The next step will be to catalog each of the items.  We have about thirty of these trays worth of items from the summer, as well as those from last year to finish! It will be a long process, but I can’t wait to get started!

More to come…..
